Using a small network, such as those designed to remove the largest fish in a home aquarium, remove debris such as leaves, twigs, feathers and anything that has fallen in the source. Waste, especially leaves quickly generate bacteria and algae, which cause the outdoor water fountains to turn brown and look dirty. If you take a moment each day to remove debris, this process will not take place. Properly remove waste helps protect the pump from damage.

Clean the source once a week. Drain the outdoor water fountains and use a rag and brush to clean the inner surface of the source. Be sure to remove dirt, bird droppings and other debris that have collected on the bottom. Doing this once a week, not grow algae.
